  • SUMMARY

Although unemployment is improving in major industrialized countries since the global financial crisis, it was not accompanied by wage increases. The long wage stagnation stoked growing interest in wage. Many explanations have been offered for the sluggish wage growth such as: change in the population makeup due to population ageing; labor market change such as changes in the turnover trend (cited as the main cause of the flattening of the Phillips curve); slowing productivity growth resulting from increase in zombie companies since the GFC; deepening gaps, or that yawning gaps in companies' productivity growth is leading to overall slowdown in productivity growth; the market power hypothesis, that increasing market power by certain companies is negatively affecting employment and wage; the inflation expectation hypothesis, that lowered inflation expectations such as low prices since the global financial crisis (GFC) are leading to lower wage.
