  • SUMMARY
Youth unemployment has become an ever-worsening problem in Korea, and no signs of improvement are observed. The problem is serious because it is not just limited to the shortage of jobs; it also leads to deterioration of the overall quality of life for young people. Due to income instability caused by sluggish employment, youths are facing an overall deterioration in the quality of life in terms of marriage, childbirth and housing. Thus, this study seeks to overcome the limitation of previous studies that focused only on the job situations in analyzing the youth problem, and to draw policy implications for improving the quality of life for each stage of life cycle for youth by understanding the changing life processes directly or indirectly caused by youth unemployment, and identifying the link between youth unemployment and living standards. Chapter 2 closely examines the current status of economic activities of contemporary youths in terms of income, expenditure and assets, and analyzes them in connection with the labor market activities, in order to draw policy alternatives for improving the quality of life for youths. Chapter 3 analyzes how the age of labor market entry affects women’s timing of childbirth. Based on the examination of the differences in the timing of labor market entry and in the timing of the first childbirth depending on women’s birth year, the causal effect of the age of labor market entry on the timing of childbirth was analyzed. In Chapter 4, the demographic composition and the structural changes in the housing standards of youth households during 2006~2017 are discussed. Youth households were first categorized into single-person households, couple households with children, and couple households without children; and the housing standards of these three categories were compared. Chapter 5 presents the overall trends and characteristics of youth culture and leisure activities based on the data of the Survey on National Leisure Activities. Using the findings, the effect of cultural and leisure activities on youths’ happiness and satisfaction was structurally analyzed. Chapter 6 uses the supplementary survey of the 19th wave of the KLIPS on the subject of youths to examine how young people engage in employment preparation as part of self-development, and how it affects the wage level of their first job. In determining the effect on wage, various factors—including interest–major congruence, parents’ educational background, and family’s economic circumstances during childhood, etc.—were taken into account in a comprehensive manner in addition to the existing variables.
